Skandar Keynes: New Pembroke Images and Exam Results

While searching online for more Pembroke College, Cambridge University images, I discovered two photos of Skandar Keynes running the Pembroke Mile on Sunday, March 11, 2012. Both images are now in the gallery.

Skandar paid £5 to run the race, which yearly supports the “Pembroke African Scholarship Scheme.” The committee awarded prizes for the “fastest, the best dressed, and the most creative completion of the mile.” I don’t know if Skandar won anything. Everyone who participated received a free brunch. See more information on the Pembroke College website and Facebook event.

I later discovered three photos of Skandar and his girlfriend attending the Idlers’ Garden Party at Ivy Court, Pembroke College, on June 17, 2012. [It's part of May Week.] I won’t reveal her name for those who don’t know it. These images are in the gallery.

I remember seeing all five photos on various Skandar fan sites and Facebook pages last year. However, none had the integrity to state their source – the public Facebook page of professional photographer and Cambridge University graduate Moses Hoyt. So I wrongly assumed these images were private.

The Skandarians watermarked some of the photos. They also watermarked the image of Skandar at Pembroke’s 2012 June Event. However, they have never named their sources. Watermarking photos that don’t belong to you is unethical. Not crediting original sources is unethical. The Skandarians are just a distributor, never a source. They have no right to watermark anything.

I wish more fan sites, blogs, Twitters, and Facebook pages would name (give credit to) their sources – both public and private. Doing so is good, basic journalism. If the source is private, they shouldn’t reproduce anything anyway. Skandar and Georgie deserve privacy from fans! Please read journalism crediting guidelines I wrote on AslansCountry.com two years ago.

Sources matter to me. They determine the news that I publish on this website. I won’t reproduce what is private (i.e. personal Facebook accounts), only what is public.

ANNUAL EXAMS

I searched “Keynes” on the Pembroke College website and found Skandar’s full name repeatedly mentioned in the 2011 and 2012 editions of the Pembroke Annual Gazette [pdf files]. The 2011 edition notes his matriculation in the 2010 Michaelmas term. Skandar received first class exam results in his first two years. As a result, he was awarded a prize in Oriental Studies (Arabic) the first year, and elected to a foundation scholarship in the second. According to the Pembroke College website,

College Scholarships (£150 p.a.) may be awarded to undergraduates who obtain a First Class result in their first year examinations and are tenable for one year only. Foundation Scholarships (£200 p.a.) and Exhibitions (£110 – £120 p.a.) may be awarded to any undergraduate of the College for distinction in a University Examination; undergraduates who reach the First Class in their second or third year examinations are normally elected to a Foundation Scholarship for the rest of their course and a final-year undergraduate without an Award who gets a First in his or her final examinations is normally elected to a Scholarship retrospectively. Foundation Awards are normally tenable until the holder completes the undergraduate degree, but until the M.A. is conferred when the holder remains in residence for postgraduate study. Scholars in residence have some entitlement to rooms in College as available. Prizes are also awarded for academic distinction. College Prizes of £150 are awarded to those who get Firsts or first class marks in examinations. There are also special prizes of £200 for outstanding performance in particular subjects, usually awarded to second – or third-year undergraduates.
